Manage Client Account Backups in WHM

Backup management is one of the most critical responsibilities for any hosting provider, especially for resellers. At PlatiniumHost, we understand the importance of data security and availability. cPanel and WHM offer robust tools to ensure that your clients' accounts are always protected with automatic and efficient backups. This article will guide you through the process of configuring automatic backups for all your client accounts directly from your WHM panel.

Accessing Backup Configuration in WHM

The first step to protect your clients' data is to enable and configure the integrated backup system in WHM. It's a simple process that will allow you to establish a solid backup policy.

  1. Log in to your WHM (Web Host Manager) panel with your reseller credentials.
  2. In the search bar on the left side, type 'Backup' or navigate to the 'Backup' section.
  3. Click on the 'Backup Configuration' option.

Configure General Backup Options

Within 'Backup Configuration', you will find various options to customize how and when backups are performed.

  • Enable Backup System: Make sure this option is checked to activate the backup system.
  • Backup Type: You can choose between 'Compressed' (recommended to save space) or 'Uncompressed'. Compressed backups use less disk space but require more processing time. Uncompressed backups are faster to generate but take up more space.
  • Backup Retention: Define how many daily, weekly, and monthly backups you want to keep. For example, you can configure to keep 7 daily, 4 weekly, and 12 monthly backups. This is crucial for having restoration points at different times.
  • Files: Select the types of files you want to include in the backup. It is recommended to check 'Backup User Files' for all user directories.
  • Databases: Make sure 'Backup SQL Databases' is activated. You can choose 'Per Account and Entire MySQL Directory' for complete coverage. cPanel uses MySQL or MariaDB for your clients' databases.
  • Mail: If your clients use cPanel's mail service, check 'Backup Mail Configuration' and 'Backup Mail Filter Files'.
  • System Files: Consider including 'Backup System Files' to have a copy of the server configuration, although this is more common on dedicated servers or directly managed VPS.
  • Alerts: Configure email notifications to receive reports on the status of backups. This is vital for monitoring the success or failure of backup operations.
Tip: A well-planned retention strategy allows you to restore data from different points in time, which is invaluable in case of data loss or malicious attacks.

Select a Backup Destination

Once the general options are configured, you must specify where the backups will be stored. It is essential to store backups in a location different from the main server to protect against hardware failures or server disasters.

  • Default Backup Directory: This is the local path where WHM will store backups before moving them to a remote destination (if applicable). Make sure there is enough disk space.
