Why Keep WordPress Updated?
Updates fix security vulnerabilities, improve performance, and add new features. An outdated WordPress is a prime target for hackers. However, updating without caution can break your site.
Secure Update Process
Step 1 — Create a Full Backup
Before any update, create a backup. Use the UpdraftPlus plugin or cPanel's Backup Wizard. If something goes wrong, you can restore in minutes.
Step 2 — Update in This Order
- First the plugins — One by one, verifying that the site works after each
- Then the theme — Verify that the design looks correct
- Finally WordPress core — Go to Dashboard → Updates → Update Now
⚠️ Do not update everything at once. If something breaks, you won't know what caused the problem. Do it one by one with verification.
Step 3 — Verify the Site Afterward
- Check the main pages of the site
- Verify that checkout works (if you have WooCommerce)
- Test the contact form
- Check the site on mobile
✅ Good practice: Enable automatic updates only for minor security updates. For major updates (WordPress 6.x → 7.x), always do it manually with a prior backup.
