What is WebP?
WebP is a modern image format created by Google that offers the same visual quality as JPEG or PNG but with a 25-35% smaller file size. Less weight = faster pages = better Google ranking.
Method 1 — LiteSpeed Cache (automatic, recommended)
If you already have LiteSpeed Cache installed in WordPress:
- Go to LiteSpeed Cache → Image Optimization
- Activate "Automatic WebP Conversion"
- Click on "Request Optimization"
- LiteSpeed converts all your existing and new images automatically
Method 2 — Plugin Converter for Media
- Install the "Converter for Media" plugin from the WordPress repository
- Go to Settings → Converter for Media
- Activate automatic WebP conversion
- Click on "Convert All Images"
Method 3 — Convert manually before uploading
For individual images, you can convert them before uploading them to WordPress:
- Squoosh.app — Free online tool from Google
- Convertio.co — Batch conversion
???? Real example: A 500 KB JPG image converted to WebP becomes approximately 320 KB — a 36% saving. On a page with 10 images, that's 1.8 MB less to load.
✅ Compatibility: WebP is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and all modern browsers. It covers over 97% of current users.
