Configure Antispam Filters in cPanel

Spam is a constant nuisance in the digital world, saturating inboxes and compromising productivity. Fortunately, cPanel, the management interface offered by PlatiniumHost, provides robust tools to combat this problem effectively. This article will guide you step-by-step in configuring SpamAssassin and creating custom mail filters to keep your inbox clean and secure. You will learn how to activate antispam defenses, adjust their sensitivity, and set up rules to manage unwanted mail, ensuring you only receive important messages.

Accessing your cPanel

Before you begin, make sure you have access to your cPanel control panel. Typically, you can access it via

yourwebsite.com/cpanel
using the credentials provided by PlatiniumHost.

Step 1: Activate Apache SpamAssassin™

Apache SpamAssassin is a powerful spam detection tool that analyzes incoming emails and assigns them a spam score. The higher the score, the more likely the email is spam.

  1. Log in to your cPanel.
  2. In the "Email" section, click on the "Apache SpamAssassin™" icon.
Tip: In some cPanel versions, this option may appear as "Spam Filters".
  3. If SpamAssassin is not enabled, you will see a button to enable it. Click on "Enable Apache SpamAssassin™".
  4. Once enabled, you can configure the spam score threshold. By default, an email is marked as spam if its score is equal to or greater than 5.0. You can adjust this value in the "Required Spam Score" section.
    • Low score (e.g., 3.0): More aggressive, will mark more emails as spam, but increases the risk of false positives (legitimate emails marked as spam).
    • High score (e.g., 7.0): Less aggressive, will let more emails through, but reduces the risk of false positives.

To start, the default value of 5.0 is a good balanced option. You can adjust it later according to your needs.

  5. Optionally, you can configure SpamAssassin to automatically delete emails marked as spam. In the "Actions" section, click on "Automatically Process New Mail Marked as Spam". Here you can also set a score threshold for automatic deletion (for example, delete emails with a score of 10.0 or more).
Important: Exercise caution when enabling automatic deletion. If the threshold is too low, you could lose legitimate emails. It is advisable to start by moving spam to a specific folder before opting for direct deletion.
  6. Click "Save" or "Update Settings" to apply the changes.

Step 2: Config
